BIOSKETCH
Dr Bawinile Hadebe is a nuclear medicine physician and Head of the Clinical Unit in the Nuclear Medicine Department at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She holds a MBChB degree from the University of Cape Town. Her interest in nuclear medicine was sparked during her internship at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg General Hospital. In 2011, she joined Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University as a registrar in nuclear medicine, earning a distinction for her MMed thesis titled “The Role of 99mTc-MIBI Scintimammography in Predicting Malignancy in Patients Suspected to have Fibroadenomas of the Breast on Mammography.” Following her training, she briefly served as a specialist at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital before joining Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in 2019.   Dr Hadebe recently completed her PhD research, which explored the use of novel molecular probes for detection of aggressive tumour biology and enhancing cancer prognosis. Together with her team, she is committed to advancing nuclear medicine in KwaZulu-Natal by increasing its accessibility, particularly for patients in rural areas, and enhancing public awareness of its capabilities. She is equally dedicated to training the next generation of nuclear medicine specialists through mentorship and to improving patient care through high-impact research. She is an ambassador for the Oncidium Foundation, a non-profit and public benefit organisation dedicated to raising awareness about radionuclide therapy for cancer care and providing support to accelerate global access.   Dr Hadebe holds leadership roles as a council member of the College of Nuclear Medicine Physicians at the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) and as a physician representative in the South African Society of Nuclear Medicine (SASNM). She is an examiner for the College of Nuclear Physicians, and is also spearheading the revision of South African guidelines for the appropriate use of PET/CT imaging. She has supervised and examined numerous MMed students, presented at prestigious local and international conferences, and published her work in peer-reviewed journals.   In recognition of her outstanding contributions to medical research, Dr Hadebe has been awarded the Discovery Foundation Fellowship Award for her PhD and the SAMRC Self-Initiated Research Grant. She has received multiple international awards for her pioneering research on CXCR4-targeted imaging of breast and gynaecological cancers including the best abstract for South Africa at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) in Toronto and the International Meeting on Hybrid Imaging (iPET) in Vienna. She has also been invited as an international expert by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to deliver lectures on nuclear medicine innovations.   Qualifications:
